Profile: Not a lot is known for certain about his life but Siddhartha Gautama Buddha is said to have been born 563BC in what is today Nepal. He was born a prince into a wealthy family, married and had a son.

Then at the age of 29 he left the palace, and seeing the human suffering around him for the first time he decided to live the life of an ascetic. However after six years and almost starving to death he reconsidered his path. Gautama then vowed to meditate under a fig tree until he achieved enlightenment which he did after a reputed 49 days.

For the next 45 years of his life he travelled and taught to all, regardless of race or class. Fundamental to Buddhist teachings is the Four Noble Truths and the belief that karma (the effects of our actions and conduct) determines are destiny in this life and the next. He died age 80 in India around 483BC.
