Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in 1749 and is one of Germany's greatest literary figures.

He was also a philosopher, playwright, scientist, and his poetry has been set to music by many great composers including Beethoven and Mozart.

Johann was famous by the age of 25 after writing his first play and then novel The Sorrows of Young Werther which were both highly successful. However he is best known for his play Faust, published in two parts, the first in 1808 and the second part following on just after his death in 1832.
